This final concert of the season with guitarist and multi-instrumentalist John Ehlis features saxophonist Craig Yaremko, bassist Scott Hogan and percussionist David Silliman for an ideal gathering of creative and innovative artists.

Reaching into Ehlis’ library of original compositions, this quartet brings a certain ease and sense of vitality to his distinctive and appealing music, one which promises more than a few surprises.

Drawn to traditional and folk music from around the world, Ehlis blends the sounds of many cultures into his own style, one that is as rich, as it is varied.  He generously offers the musicians in his groups the opportunity to let their own creative voices flourish and contribute equally to the direction of the music.  As one can imagine, the art of improvisation is a crucial element in this situation, however it is the spirit and soul of the players which gives life to the music, becoming an uplifting event for the performers and audience alike.

John Ehlis “New Quartet” with special guest Tony White

Guitarist John Ehlis brings together another group of talented and open minded artists for a spirited and engaging musical adventure.  With Marty Fogel on woodwinds, Scott Hogan on bass, David Silliman on drums, and special guest Los Angeles saxophonist Tony White, tonight’s performance promises to deliver an exciting evening of music from the stage at Trumpets.

John Ehlis draws inspiration from a diverse field of innovative artists and ideas as well as from traditional and folk music from around the world.  Ehlis has performed with  esteemed artists ranging from saxophonists Oliver Lake and John Tchicai to vocalists Marie Afonso ( of Zap Mama) and LOIRE (aka Lori Cotler), Joe Craven (David Grisman Group), frame drum master Glen Velez, classical guitarist Philip Hii, singer/songwriter Scott E. Moore, Basque musicians Tapia and Leturria, Danish drummer Kresten Osgood and Finnish saxophonist Mikko Innanen.

Saxophonist Marty Fogel has toured with renowned jazz artists Don Cherry and Gerry Mulligan amongst others.  He also spent several years performing and recording in the band of the legendary rock artist Lou Reed.  Marty was a cofounder of The Everyman Band, an innovative and internationally acclaimed group which toured in Europe and recorded for ECM Records.

Bassist Scott Hogan attended NYU as a jazz performance major and studied under Mike Richmond. Scott also studied with John Patitucci, who recommended him to Mercury Records for touring with the pop group Hanson.  Recently Scott played bass in the Bernie Worrell Orchestra touring throughout the states for four years.

Drummer and percussionist, David Silliman's middle name should be versatility.  His exciting rhythmic energies add color and mood to any musical performance, whether in accompanying song stylists such as Mariah Carey, Cassandra Wilson, and Blossom Dearie or playing with Colombian Harpist Edmar Castaneda.  He has performed in concerts and festivals in Italy, Vienna, Berlin, the North Sea, Monterey, Uruguay and Lithuania.  Highlights of his work includes concert tours with Al DiMeola, Cassandra Wilson and Leslie Uggams.
Special guest Tony White is an Eastman saxophone artist as well as a Performing Arts Coordinator and Arts Advocate.  Through his many years working with young people in  Los Angeles, White recognized that he should be on the stage performing music.   With the encouragement of Buddy Collette and Ernie Watts, Tony began to perform and study with jazz artists on the West Coast including Jeff Clayton, Gerald Wilson, Billy Mitchell and Dr. Art Davis.

On Kentucky Avenue

A Celebration of Atlantic City’s Famed Club Harlem

“It is the effervescent, revue-formatted display of talent that makes the production. “

- William Wolf, Wolf Entertainment Guide

ATLANTIC CITY was known for its music street called KENTUCKY AVENUE on the North Side of town.  Music flowed from the clubs on both sides of the street from MEMORIAL DAY to LABOR DAY.

Before the Casinos took over…..

The most famous of the clubs on KENTUCKY AVENUE was the CLUB HARLEM.  This was like “the Black Copacabana” as it featured all the major Black talent of the era complete with flair, fashion and fantastic stage shows with Showgirls, Dancers & Comedians thrilled and entertained the masses.

The setting for ON KENTUCKY AVENUE: A Celebration of Atlantic City’s Famed Club Harlem is the CLUB HARLEM dress rehearsal for opening night of the 1969 season.

Within our show there is a ‘love triangle’ between the MC (Ivan King), the lead show girl and the featured female vocalist.

The show has an original score true to the era interspersed with classic songs from the 1960’s

ON KENTUCKY AVENUE: A Celebration of Atlantic City’s Famed Club Harlem will bring you back to a time when nightclubbing was in vogue and leggy showgirls, black comics, specialty acts and great singers & dancers reigned supreme.

When Colombian harp virtuoso Edmar Castañeda plays, it’s hard to believe only one man and not a trio of harpists is performing. Castañeda’s remarkable technique—he plays lead, rhythm, and bass lines all at once—is equaled only by his soulful improvisations. He leads his acclaimed global jazz trio in this concert.

His newest show "Musically Yogic" is an intimate affair of rare gems, darkly-textured melodies, surprise guests, and of course the signature humour and soaring silky voice that makes audiences adore him.

ON KENTUCKY AVENUE – The Club Harlem Revue takes place in a time, before the Casinos took over Atlantic City, when nightclubbing was in vogue with leggy showgirls, hysterical comedians, and great singers & dancers.
The most famous of the clubs on the musical street known as Kentucky Avenue was the Club Harlem. It was thought of as a “black Copacabana” and featured the major black talent of the era with flair, fashion and fantastic stage shows from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

This revue is set during the Club Harlem dress rehearsal for opening night of the 1969 season. Within our fictional show, there is a love triangle between the MC, the lead showgirl, and the featured female singer. The show features an original score true to the era, interspersed with classic songs from the 60s, and captures the feel and aura of the club, based on experiences of Adam and Jeree Wade who performed there during different eras  30 years apart.

The term "crossover artist" can mean many things. In the case of Argentine pianist and composer Dario Boente, it's shorthand for a musician as effective in playing romantic jazz tunes on a grand piano as he is in programming world-beat electronica. Since moving to New York in 1999, Dario has released seven albums and compilations as a leader alongside such top-shelf players as Antonio Sánchez, Miguel Zenón, and Ronny Jordan; and he's performed in more than 20 countries around the world. Tonight, our ongoing "New Dimensions In Latin Jazz" series presents Dario Boente at the helm of Proyecto Sur - an acoustic group whose repertoire encompasses jazz standards, Argentine classics, and Boente's sparkling original compositions. "Dario's performances are full of lyricism, rich harmonies, impeccable technique, rhythm and jazz vocabulary, all wrapped up with exquisite romanticism." (The Village Voice)

From Sevilla, Ricardo Moreno combines his flamenco mastership of the guitar with brings Chacarera rhythms of the north of Argentina and the colors of modal free-Jazz in the musical project “Flamenco Avenue Quartet”

Born into a gyspy family in the depths on Andalucia, guitarist Ricardo Moreno has performed with some of the greatest flamenco artists, such as Alba Molina, “El Lebrijano” and Raimundo Amador.

Ricardo joins forces with fellow Spaniard and bass-player based in NY, the classically trained, award winning Javier Moreno.

Ricardo and Javier together with Argentinian percussionist extraordinaire Franco Pinna and the great George Dubin on the piano will create a new sound that paves the way into the future of flamenco-fusion.

From Madrid, Rebeca Vallejo, a versatile and innovative vocalist, known for combining her ancestral flamenco roots, her deep love and understanding of Brazilian music, with the language of jazz, creating a sound that is truly unique. Her two albums have taken her to stages in Brazil, Cuba, Germany, Belgium, Great Britain and Spain. "Sabrina Lastman Quartet: CD Release!!" - 7:30pm
425 Lafayette St
New York, NY 10001
(212) 539-8770
Price: $14.00

Sabrina Lastman is a New York-based vocalist and songwriter from Uruguay/ Israel. The Candombe Jazz Sessions -her latest album released by ZOHO Music display Sabrina's unique, multifaceted vocal style, singing in Spanish and Portuguese. The Sabrina Lastman Quartet is an innovative music project that brings together jazz, South American rhythms and contemporary music. Candombe is the percussion-driven genre with origins in African Bantu, primarily played in Uruguay, and a precursor of the Tango. Accompanied by world class musicians pianist Emilio Solla, dummer/percussionist David Silliman and bassist/ Grammy nominee Pablo Aslan, Sabrina delivers a stunning, soulful tour de force.

"Telling a story in song does not require words. Of course, if you are a singer, you might then need an exceptional vocal instrument, imagination, and a willingness to walk on tightropes — all of which brings us to Uruguayan-born singer and composer Sabrina Lastman."
